Formes simples, figures fractales, couleurs sourdes ou éclatantes, gangues épineuses ou duveteuses, voire architectures extravagantes, les cactus et autres plantes succulentes sont un objet de fascination depuis des siècles. Bousculant, par leur esthétique singulière, parfois inquiétante, notre représentation du végétal, ces plantes s’étudient, se collectionnent et sont à l’origine des plus remarquables jardins de la Riviera. Elles ont surtout captivé de nombreux artistes et inspiré des œuvres aussi différentes qu’un film d’Eisenstein, un dessin sur iPad de David Hockney ou un porte-manteau Gufram !

Simple shapes; fractal figures; muted or dazzling colors; spiny or downy exteriors; extravagant architectures—cactuses and other succulent plants have been an object of fascination for centuries. With their singular, sometimes disquieting aesthetics, these plants shake up our representation of the plant world. They are studied, collected, and are at the origin of some of the most remarkable gardens on the Riviera. They have most of all captivated numerous artists and inspired works as diverse as an Eisenstein film, a drawing on iPad by David Hockney, and a Gufram coat rack!
